undecided endings part 7 When I awoke, bright rays of sunlight streamed through the slats in the shutters, and noise drifted up from the streets below. I rubbed my eyes and looked around the small room. Our packs were in the corner and a small pile of folded blankets lie on the floor beside the straw bed on which I lay. Adela had long since gone. I sat up and allowed my eyes to adjust to the light as I tried to recall the events of the night before. Images of the performers came back to me, followed by vivid memories of Rowan and the maids I had teased him about, doing exactly what they always did. I remembered leaving the last pair dancing in the moonlight as I followed Adela to the inn, and wondered where my friends were at present. I got up and found my way down the stairs and to the streets outside.
It was high noon, and the city was as bustling with the same business it
undecided endings part 6 As the roar slowly quieted, the players who had been practicing hours before once more picked up their instruments and began to play lively music. The square came alive as the music took command and the people began to dance. Adela, who loved to dance, quickly approached a tall man with the build of a woodcutter, and asked him to dance with her, dragging him into the lighted square. Some found their way back to their homes or nearby inns, but many stayed on to enjoy the remainder of the night. I found an empty barrel in the shadow of a nearby hovel and sat down, taking in everything around me.
The lord sat at the table still, a large goblet in his hand and the look of one who has had too much to drink on his face. The lady and her son, along with some servants, made their way back to the large house, but the young noblewoman remained in her seat, intently watching the crow
undecided endings part 5 We found Adela seated on the edge of the fountain waiting for us and watching the nobles as they were seated at the long tables. The crowd grew silent, waiting for the lord to address them and announce the beginning of the celebration. After a pause, he stood and faced the people, a wide smile on his face and excitement in his eyes.
"Tonight," he said, his deep voice carrying loudly over the hoards of people, "marks the beginning of the harvest celebration."
A loud cheer greeted his statement.
"We have been blessed with a bountiful harvest, as always, and hope to partake of it tonight. I would like to welcome the entertainers who have come from afar to offer your skills during our festival and hope that you are treated with the utmost respect while you are here in our humble town. And now, without further ado, let the celebration begin
undecided endings part 4 The town of Dirwing was large by most standards. The fields alone that skirted it reached for miles in every direction. Huge tracts of land filled with produce of every kind stretched as far as the eye could see. It was no surprise that the harvest was so celebrated. It was because of it that the town could be called one of the wealthiest in the western realm. People came from miles around to be a part of the festivities and join in the bounty of the harvest.
We entered the bustling town in the late afternoon, just as the street side lanterns were being lit. The outer edges of the city were vacant, but even from the outskirts the chaos in the center could be heard. Brightly colored ribbons hung from windows and flowers decorated doorways of shops and hovels that we passed. Red streamers crisscrossed overhead on the rooftops, mak
undecided endings part 3 When I awoke, it was midmorning, our little camp had been neatly packed, and I knew we were once again moving on. Adela stood some distance away, tying the last of the packs and checking to see if she had missed anything; I didnt see Rowan anywhere.
Good morning, Adela said without looking up, how did you sleep?
I sat up and looked around at the place that had been our home the last night, baffled at how undisturbed it looked as we prepared to take our leave.
Fine, I said in response to my friends question. Where is Rowan?
He went to the stream some time ago to get some water to douse the fire with. He has been gone long enough; maybe you should go along and fetch him.
Could I have something to eat b
ReflectionsVal's pursuit led him to the foul beast's domain. The hollowed-out cavern reeked of blood and rancid meat. The dim light he had seen as he charged through the tunnel after the monster could now be identified: torches. Rows of mysteriously lit torches lined the walls of the huge cave. At its center was a substantially large labyrinth of mirrors.
He spotted the beast entering.
He spun his silver broadsword in his hand and hurried in behind it.
His garb was a simple blue and white crusader's leather with thick armored pads and reinforcing steel studs. Lightweight and flexible, but quite effective defense against blunt blows and – in a pinch – the slashing claws of the unholy spawn of the earth. All monster-hunters wore a similar variety in Val's experience. It would serve him well in these close quarters of the mirrored maze.
Right, left, forward, left, right he turned, always catching a glimpse of the beast's tail as he wove his way through the corridors. Every so often he sp
