undecided endings part 14 I unrolled my mental map of the house and began to retrace the path Katherine had unknowingly given me, and set off down the hall to my right. For a moment I doubted the plan would work and considered turning back and leaving the rest to fate, but Rowan's words echoed in my mind.
Do not stop or slow.
And so I continued down the hall, knowing the next few minutes were the most critical I had ever faced. My instincts told me to walk slowly and quietly, look down, and stick to the shadows, but I knew I could not do that this time.
Walk confidently and act like you know what you are doing. If you try to hide or act suspicious in any way, they will stop you, so you must be sure.
As I neared the end of the hall and prepared to turn down the very corridor that led to the lord's chambers, I sent a si
undecided endings part 13 "Last night I was here in my room, contemplating the existence of magic and wizards when I heard lots of shouting and commotion. A few moments later, my maid burst into my room all flustered and out of breath. I asked what was troubling her, and she collapsed on the floor. I rushed to her side and spoke softly to her until she came around, then asked her what had happened. She told me that a man had tried to kill my father! At first I did not believe her. Why would anyone want to kill my father? He is a kind, just ruler and has no enemies."
She trailed off, deep in thought, but time was short and we needed answers.
"What happened next?" Rowan prompted her.
"That's all I know of," she said, "after that, a guard came to my room and told me that I was to stay here until further notice.

The guards at the gate stopped us and looked suspiciously at Rowan as he explained that Katherine had given him permission to enter. They asked about me, and he told them I was a friend and that Katherine had asked him to bring me along. Eventually they let us pass, but made us leave the pack with them. Rowan grudgingly agreed, and we walked through the gates up the broad dirt path toward the house.
The guards at the front door let us in and told us to wait at the door until an escort came to take us to Katherine's quarters. We stood there looking into the huge hall for some time. I took in every detail and tried to commit it to memory in case I found myself there again on my search for the lord's chambers. There was a large double staircase that curved
undecided endings part 11 At high noon I ducked and dodged through the crowds and took a few side streets and looped back into the square, looking back over my shoulder to be sure Allan had not found me again. Rowan was already waiting when I got there and the serious expression on his face quickly chased away the flashback I had to the night before and our cold encounter with the fountain.
"Any news?" I asked as I approached, knowing the answer before he replied.
"The entire house is in a lockdown," he said, "Last night a hooded man was seen snooping around the house. Eventually the guard caught him down the hall from the lord's chambers, hiding in the shadows. He was searched and found to be in possession of a dagger coated in a rare type of poison. He was caught before anything could happen, but security has been tightened and the guard doubled."
